What Is Roll Forming?
Although you may well know what roll forming is, here is an exact definition fromNational Material.com’s website,
“Roll forming is a continuous process which converts sheet metal into an engineered shape using consecutive sets of mated rolls, each of which makes only incremental changes in the form. The sum of these small changes in form is a complex profile.”
In conventional forming, the entire shaping of the metal is done at one time. This limits the complexity of the design since metal can only be shaped so much before it will split. But in roll forming, very elaborate forming patterns and shapes can be achieved since only a very small amount of strain is placed on each piece at every station and only a small section is bent at every stage.
The result is much more complex shapes and designs.
The Forming Process
A roll former operates by feeding a coil or long individual strip of metal through a roll forming line which converts the flat sheet to a contoured cross-sectional profile. As was mentioned, the secret of this approach is the consecutive computer-controlled forming stations, each of which bends the piece a little closer to the desired shape. The more complex the final shape is supposed to be, the more steps and bends the material goes through. The roll forming line can do all of the following:
• Bend metal
• Form metal into tubes
• Create metal maze-like structures
• Punch holes
What Does Our New ASC Roll Former Do?
Our new roll former expertly fulfills all of the above description of what a roll former can do and, in addition, offers a number of improvements to our customers’ metal experience.
A Closer Look at the Improvements
At Lifetime Metal Sales, we’re all about improvements, and this new ASC trim roll former delivers them in spades.
• Prevention of Oil Canning. This new roll former produces beaded fascia from 3.5″ to 10″ face. The beads prevent oil-canning. (Oil canning is, as you know, the name given to the unsightly wrinkles that occur in thin metals as they expand and contract with temperature changes).
• Easier installation. The absence of a top hem makes it easier to slide behind the drip edge. It has a slight outward curve on the face so that it stays tight to the sub-fascia when installed. We stock our fascia with a 5.75″ face.
• Elimination of Variability and Twist. The rat-guard and z-trim dimensions are only slightly changed, but there is now a hem on the top of the nailing flange. By rollforming these trims with the 2nd hem we eliminate the variability and twist that we’ve fought over the years.
• More Efficient Snow Guard Production. The snow guard shape is only modified slightly and shouldn’t create any issues for our customers. The good news is that we’ll produce it more efficiently.
• Overall Increase in Production and Quality. This machine allows us to increase production and quality without increasing our labor pool, increasing efficiency and keeping costs under control.
